“And the winner of the X Factor, 2010 is...MATT CARDLE!!!”
“Fuck yeah!” Aiden screamed louder than any of his fellow contenders. He jumped around the small holding room, grabbing people left, right and centre. “He did it! YES!”
The eliminated contestants were all waiting to go back onto the stage that had made them famous to join the winner for the final song. Aiden couldn’t wait; he hadn’t seen Matt all day. There had been rehearsal upon rehearsal; Matt was in meetings here, meetings there and meetings every-fucking-where.
Aiden wanted his Matt. They had both been gutted at Aiden’s departure a few weeks ago; Aiden’s dream was smashed but they were also devastated that they wouldn’t be able to spend all their time together. They wouldn’t be able to stay up drinking beer and bitching about Cher all night when the teenager had finally dragged herself to bed. They wouldn’t be able to play pranks on one another backstage. Matt would always know where his hat was; there was no more Aiden to play hide and seek with it. These were the public things that they didn’t mind people knowing. There were other, much more private things, which they never wanted to let out. They were just for them. It was theirs; it was no-one else’s business.
The signal was shown for them to rush onto the stage, and rush they did. Nearly every person ran forward with speed, which very nearly knocked Matt off his feet! Some of the less talented, more jealous contestants showed their displeasure. Fuck them, he thought as he ran forward. He needed to congratulate his man. Aiden needed to show him that he knew what this meant for Matt.
And he did. He grabbed Matt in a tight embrace, beaming from ear to ear. Matt reacted enthusiastically, hugging tightly back and singing straight into Aiden’s eyes. The smile on Matt’s face warmed Aiden and touched his heart. He couldn’t have been happier, even if he’d won himself.
“Yes!” he screamed again. “You did it!”
The small hand pulling them apart brought Aiden back to his senses. He had forgotten. In his elation he had nearly messed up Matt’s big moment. Shit! After one last embrace, Aiden stepped back, hoping that no-one had noticed his indiscretion.
They weren’t ashamed of being gay, or of being together. No, this was different. They had decided when they had started their relationship to wait. To let the series finish, and should one of them win, to let the hype die down a bit before coming out. This was to be Matt’s glory moment, not to be overshadowed by Aiden’s impulsiveness or desires. Bless Dannii for having the good sense to intervene. They had informed their mentor after their first night together, and she couldn’t have been any more supportive.
No. Aiden could wait. He’d waited weeks. He could wait one more fucking song. And then he’d have his man back.
